More safety from MySpace parent tool

Social-networking giant MySpace plans to offer free software enabling parents to keep tabs on their children's online identities.

Code-named Zephyr, the software tracks the name, age and location that children are using on MySpace.

With the software, parents can determine whether their kids have profiles and validate the age listed in it, Hemanshu Nigam, chief security officer of MySpace, said in a statement.

MySpace, which has an estimated 135 million users, said much of the site's safety features are age-based and depend on people providing their true age.

"This really is an age-verification tool," Yankee Group analyst Jill Aldort told internetnews.com.

"It's a fantastic tool for engaged parents" to monitor their child's online behavior, John Sheehan, Cybertip line manager for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

Sheehan said the software won't be a silver bullet for online predators, but said Zephyr is part of the "arsenal of child safety tools.

'Hey kids, download this software and have your parents spy on you,'" the analyst joked.

Whether the plan will spark user protest similar to what Facebook encountered last year remains to be seen.

" MySpace said it would add new staff to provide 24-hour monitoring, including matching new users against a database of 550,000 convicted offenders, internetnews.com reported at the time.

  Skype switch on Internet TV
A decade-long partnership between the co-founders of Skype yesterday blossomed in the shape of Joost– an online TV service to “deliver the perfect broadcast experience” without scheduling.
Unveiling their beta product, Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis said Joost, formerly codenamed The Venice Project, was their reaction to “a critical gap in the online video entertainment arena.
” Just as free net telephony became their goal in the pioneering days of Skype, back in 2005, free TV today is an “equally attractive proposition,” Mr Friis said in a v-log last week.
However the Skype founders hope that the success of the video-sharing website, which attracts over 100,000 new clips every day, is proof that now is the right time to focus on net-based video entertainment.
A similar message came yesterday from Fredrik de Wahl, the chief executive of Joost.
He said: “People are looking for increased choice and flexibility in their TV experience, while the entertainment industry needs to retain control over their content.
"His comments refer to Joost’s heavy marketing as a “piracy-proof Internet platform that enables premium interactive video experiences, while guaranteeing copyright protection for content owners and creators.
”Warner Music and Endemol, the makers of Celebrity Big Brother, have agreed to provide content during the trial, with other major content providers and user-generated content expected to follow.
Writing on the Joost portal, they added most of the development work took only about 12 months thanks to some of the world's best engineers, Web gurus and media visionaries, striving toward the common goal of ‘Goodbye Television, Hello Joost.

Embed a photo gallery with Picasa Web Albums
As webmasters (and web users), you know that images can liven up text-heavy pages and help engage readers. Maybe you keep a personal blog and you'd like to share a holiday photo album. Or maybe you manage a knitting tutorial site, and you'd like to post photos with step-by-step captions. Well, Picasa Web Albums can help you do all of these things. Just upload photos to your own Picasa Web Albums page, then embed a link to that album on your site. Because your photos will be stored on a Google server, you can let us worry about hosting your files while you concentrate on creating a great looking gallery that will enrich your site.

After signing up and creating a web album, simply click the Embed in Blog/MySpace link in that album. Just like with AdSense, you'll then need to copy and paste the provided HTML into your site's source code. Republish your site, and the cover photo of that album will appear on your site, already linked to your web album. When embedding your photos, please keep the AdSense image guidelines from last month in mind.

Your Picasa Web Albums account is free and comes with 250 MB of storage space -- enough room to store about 1000 photos (at 1600 pixels each). It's also possible to upgrade and order additional space (up to 250GB) as your photo storage needs grow. And unlike some other photo sharing sites, Picasa Web Albums retains the quality of your images so you and your site's visitors can download those same high resolution photos off the web and to their computers.

Finally, you can now also upload video into any web album -- a nice touch to really make your content come alive. And while you can't currently customize the look of your Picasa Web Albums page to match your site, we hope you'll find that its clean, uncluttered look complements your site's design.

This new age is built on standards. There are design standards, such as Cascading Style Sheets; meta data standards, such as XHMTL; data transfer standards, such as XML; and accessibility standards for the visually impaired. Design tools for the Web artist are needed to support these standards.

For the last nine years one tool has dominated the Web design world: Dreamweaver. Now, Microsoft is poised to release a competitor.

Microsoft expression. We looked at the latest beta release (CTP), released at the end of last week, to examine what they're prepared to deliver.
